Vercors massif

Description

Often shortly just called a “plateau”, the Vercors massif has a much more complex geography that makes it rich and appealing. This is due to its karst topography. This massif has different climatic influences and varied vegetation between the northern and southern parts.

The roads were usually chiselled out of the vertical rocky gorges so typical of limestone reliefs. This gives the visitor a thrill of vertigo before emerging onto a green or snow-covered plateau depending on the season.

The Vercors is widely known in recent French history as having been one of the natural fortresses of the Resistance and also one of the important battle sites during the Second World War.

It is now a mecca for cross-country skiing with ski stations such as Autrans, Méaudre and the plateau of Gèves that hosts the “Foulée Blanche” competition every year or the Corrençon site which opens its doors onto an immense domain that goes all the way to the southern part of the massif. Alpine skiing also has its place with ski resorts such as Lans en Vercors or Villard de Lans. In the summertime, these places becomes the playground for mountain bikers because of a variety of trails going from “easy” to more technical. And of course hikers will find very different landscapes here, between the southern and northern foothills of Diois to the ridge that tower over the Isere or Drac rivers. These vertical spaces that were carved by water over millennia attract mountaineers looking for walls to climb that count between some of the hardest. The underground spaces, created by the passage of water, are a paradise for beginner and experienced speleologists. Several of these “holes” are well equipped to allow a novice to discover this activity and maybe even become a true fan of this varied discipline.

Les Quatre Montagnes

The “Four Mountains” Vercors designate the northern extremity of the massif and gets its name from the 4 historical communes Villard de Lans, Lans en Vercors, Autrans and Méaudre.

There is a hiking trail that encompasses these four mountains called the T4M.
